Reflection of The Museum Team Project

Reflection of DePaul Art Museum

Momo, Ouadir and I visited the DePaul Art Museum for doing team project.  When we got there, we noticed that the museum was smaller than other public museums, but it was a new and clear building.  Firstly, we decided to grasp impression and information of the museum.  My first impression of the museum is very calm and warm because there was a just one person, who we interviewed with, and the lights of the ceiling created warm atmosphere.  In terms of sound, there is no any sound such as background music, people’s talking and some noise.  It was very quiet, so we even talked in whispers each other during searching the museum.  In case of basic information of the museum, its work day is every day for free because it is public museum.  There is no gift shop, food facilities and library.  If we want to use the library, we could use the DePaul’s library which located in two blocks away from the museum.  The museum is made of first and second floors.  In terms of one special exhibit, the paintings in the second floor exhibit are very vivid and dynamic. Also, they have bright and various colors.   So while I was appreciating the paintings, I felt that active expression and dynamism. The paintings made me an active person briefly.  We chose the painting named ‘Adolescence’ made by Richard Hull. The reason why we chose the painting is it seems like adolescence’s passion and variation as the painting’s name. Also, it has various colors and turbulent lines just like Van Gogh’s art works. The curve lines are very dynamic and vital.  As we interviewed with one employee, we learned about new characteristics of the museum.  It is a public museum, and all of materials are new because it opened just one year ago. The most interesting thing is that all art works of the museum are made by just Chicago artists.  We interviewed one visitor who is majoring in art in the DePaul University.  That is why she visited the museum. I think that her age is around 21 or 22.  She liked the museum’s atmosphere especially high ceiling and lights. And she liked the second floor exhibit because she liked the vivid and colorful paintings.  After I finished the museum trip, I realized that even though a museum is small, the museum has unique atmosphere and its own style.

Shadow

Many people do not care about their shadow because it is very ordinary thing in their daily life.  Usually, they do not tend to observe and appreciate the shadow specifically.  Neither do I.  However, my stereotype was changed after I finished this assignment.  If we are interested in our shadow, we could invent and notice new things.  Rediscovery of Shadow.

Firstly, I took a picture of my body-shadow shape.  As you know, its shadow could be changed the size and length as different angles.  The reason why I took a picture of my body-shadow shape is that I wanted to express my thoughts about our hidden aspects.  Have you guys ever searched your hidden talents and abilities?  Have you guys ever invented your various aspects?  Many people cannot invent their own abilities and various aspects by ignoring daily aspects.  Our shadow reflects of the point.  We may not care about ours images, but we concentrate on other’s images and evaluate them.  Our images could be changed as different angles just like shadow.  It could be larger or smaller than ours true image, depending on view angles.  If we invent about our own images, we can improve our abilities and invent our new aspects.  So we need to concentrate on daily stuff.  In terms of art, we should care about ordinary parts that we did not care about before in any art works, so that we can invent hidden meanings and learn about some various aspects just like shadow.  After I took this picture, I noticed that we could learn about ourselves by concentrating on shadow in daily life.

Secondly, I took some hand-shaped pictures.  I expressed some animals and symbolic things by using my two hands.  I wanted to express that we can make art works by just using our hands.  If we see just our hands, we could be bored. However, once we do lights effect on our hands, we could make great art works as you see bottom pictures.  So we should be creative for appreciating some art works and making the art works by ourselves.

Artist #2 : Film

“Life Through a Lens”

This film is about an Annie Leibovitz who is very famous photographer, and it handles with her life.  This movie starts with some interviews that some celebrities did such as Hilary Clinton, Whoopi Goldberg and so on.  And this film made by her sister Babara Leibovitz.  In the beginning the Babara Leibovitz asks her, “What is photographer’s life?” She answers, “The life is looking through a lens.” The answer is very impressing for me because it is very short explanation, but it represents of artists’ whole life especially photographer.  In this film, many celebrities do interview about Annie Leibovitz, including her passion on work and her personality.  Also, her family explains about her life and background.  So does Annie Leibovitz.  Many photographs, that she took, and films show up in this film by explaining about that.  Also, I could see some process how she works with people. In terms of film’s materials, there are lots of things that she did.  Firstly, she takes lots of commerce pictures, and she has been taking pictures of various celebrities such as George Clooney, Hilary Clinton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kirsten Dunst, Mick Jagger, Demi Moore and so on.  I cannot help but mention about a magazine called Rolling Stone after I watched this film.  The Rolling Stone and she influenced on each other.  She used to take cover pictures of the magazine for a long time.  And the magazine effected on her photographs’ style.  But the interesting thing is that she insists the cover pictures are just advertisement tools not art or photographs. That is why many celebrities regard as the best photographer of the world.  Secondly, she regards family as a very important thing, and she has been taking pictures that are related with family.  Her family pictures are very sentimental.  She has three kids, so that she tends to take pictures of family habitually.  Also, she thinks that her camera is another member of family.  Thirdly, she takes abstract and artistic pictures.  In the middle of the film, she interviews about her opinion that as taking dancing pictures, she expresses her artistic moment. Also, her photographs look simple but they suggest deeper meanings.  And she creates standard of beauty by making unique pictures such as nude picture of pregnant, John Lennon and Yoko Ono’ pictures.  Lastly, she pursues daily life’s pictures.  If we see the pictures of Rolling Stones, we could notice that she likes daily life-style photographs.  After I watched this film, I was pleased with learning about this great photographer.  I used to be curious about who took these pictures when I saw the famous pictures that showed up in this film.  Also, I am interested in photographs, and I want to learn about that in the future.  I respect her passion and enthusiasm on work.  From now on, maybe I will appreciate photographs specifically.

Reflection AIC Class Visit

In Art class, we went to the Art Institute of Chicago for fieldtrip.  It was my second time, but I was excited to visit the museum.  While I was looking around the museum, I noticed that the some art works changed to other art works.  So I could enjoy new art works that I had never seen before.  And I could discuss about various art works with my partner by seeing each painting specifically.  The most interesting thing during fieldtrip is that Jing and I had a presentation about our interesting art work.  So we chose the “Nude Under a Pine Tree” made by Pablo Picasso.  It was very abstract painting, and it is made of three colors such as green, skin and grey.  Therefore, its atmosphere was so gloomy.  Also, I learned about various art works from my classmates’ art works presentations.  After we finished our presentation with my classmates, we took some pictures in front of some art works.  While I was seeing the various art works, I learned about the art works detailed.  And I learned that I had not noticed before because we just learned from textbook.  In conclusion, the fieldtrip was very valuable trip for me.

Reflection AIC Website

While I was looking around the AIC website, I could not stay my eyes away from the site.  First of all, the website allowed me to search some art works that I wanted to see easily.  If we see the collection sections, we can search various art works according to regions and history.  So we can find the art works that we wanted to see before.  Secondly, the website provided me own collection.  If we just make our account on the website, we could have our own collection by adding various art works that we like.  It was so interesting.  Lastly, the website has shop.  So we can buy some art works online by registering our account.  I wanted to buy art work called ‘Nighthawks’ by Edward Hopper.  That is why I chose the painting ‘Nighthawks’ as I posted the picture of painting above.

Midterm Question #9

My favorite idea is the artists represent our life and history by commemorating some special events, so that they can express our past time, present time and future time.  I chose the “Armistice night, 1918 by George Benjamin Luks because this painting shows us about important history event of mankind.  The artist made the painting to commemorate the armistice day on November 11 after the World War1 finished.  The painting represents our emotions such as delight and happiness by using vivid and various colors.  The artist wanted us to remember the day and to remind us of the war’s cruelty. So the artist allowed us to think about our past time, present time and future time by reflecting the history event.

Exploring the Public Art

I have explored the public art in Chicago three times so far.  I like the exploring!  I could see various master pieces and learn about them specifically.  Firstly, after I finished the art trip, I wanted to make some art works that can set in downtown.  Of course, it will not happen.  I will study harder the art appreciation.  Secondly, while I was exploring many art works, I learned about various artists of the world. Especially, when I explored the Art Institute of Chicago, I found lots of artists including Pablo Picasso, Van Gogh, Andy Warhol and so on.  And I noticed that Picasso made not only paintings but also sculpures just like Picasso's Chicago.  Thirdly, after I saw the Vietnam Memorial, I felt spirit of the veterans.  I think that it has big meaning in terms of memorial monument.  After that I saw the Flamingo.  It has very bright color, so that it attracted my attention as soon as I found it.  Finally, while I exploring the art works, I met not only gorgeous sculptures but also kind people who took my pictures.  I cannot help but like this beautiful Chicago.
